Little Groovy Girls Go………..Setting a Fire

Kid runners may have been zipped up and shivering in the freezing cold as they approached the Fun Run starting line. This was one of the first two events that made up the Detroit Marathon weekend.. Despite the first flurries of winter, the smiles and excitement of the kids awaiting the go in their little corral, melted the hearts of all their fans.

Regardless the temperature, the sun still came out, shining on these pint size racers who had ice in their veins as they shot across the starting line to clock some cool, one-mile times. The starting line was a blizzard of activity as the kids passed out of the shoot and down the Riverwalk. The course was a half mile out, a quick turn around along the Detroit River and then back on Atwater towards cheering fans who watched their runners return with the Detroit Skyline as their backdrop. Everything about this race was the positive and hopeful feel blanketing the city of Detroit as well as the future of running.

My daughter crossed the line and then turned to find her girlfriend......she waited for her to cross and then didn't wait a single second longer to hug her!

In many cases, out on these cold streets of Detroit, were the kids of runners who run weekly these same streets. Many members of the Downtown Detroit Runners and Walkers gathered up a group of their kids, to all run together, just like these friends run every Tuesday themselves together in the city. “I can’t help but smile when I see all our kids together; doing what we love to do, in the city we love.” Says DTRW member Christy Schneider Sherding. She and her daughter took part in a recent Kids Club that emerged from some of the members discussing their futures in running, and how their passion could merge with their goals for their families. From the discussion emerged a group of parents who put together some practice sessions with the support of their own running club and RunDetroit, who offered the kids a place to meet for their very own group runs, in order to train for their Kids’ Fun Run in Detroit.

The kids definitely unthawed the frozen streets of the D by burning rubber along the course. It was a great day to watch kids run the D: The kids who will inevitably, run the D.
